Babino Polje (island Mljet, Croatia) is a administrative center of island Mljet. It is part of Dubrovnik-Neretva's district. Babino Polje is located in central part of island Mljet and it is it's largest settlement. Babino Polje is one of the oldest settlements on island Mljet. It is located in the bottom of hills Veliki and Mali Grad and above fertile plain.
It is located 6 km far from Sobra and 18 km far from Polace. You can come to Babino Polje by a car with a ferry from peninsula Peljesac (Prapratno in Ston). If you are coming by plane you will get to Airport Dubrovnik and take a ferry for island Mljet.
On island Mljet you will get to Babino Polje by bus or taxi by main island's road. To get to island Mljet you can experience water transfers
by water taxi
and speed boats or you can rent a boat. There are many beaches and bays nearby where you go on excursions, cruising, and experience water activities.

Babino Polje has around 330 inhabitants. Most of the inhabitants are directed to agriculture, vine growing, fishing and tourism. Babino Polje is consisted of three hamlets: Zabrijeze, Srsenovici and Zadublje.
BABINO POLJE HISTORY
Babino Polje has been inhabitated by Slaves in 7th and 8th century. Legend says Babino Polje was named by old lady to which duke Desa gave a land as a reward for all good advices during the battles with duke Remin. „Baba“ is a name for 12 generations who gained land within fertile plain.
First church was built in 11th century. Babino Polje was first time mentioned in 1222. as largest settlement on island Mljet.

Sotnica is judicial, administrative and economic building built by Benedictines. On a balcony of Sotnica is tombstone. Ducal Palace is a building built by Dubrovnik's Republic at the end of 15th century. It has spacious yard, terrase and a well. Odisej's Cave is located on south side of island Mljet.
It is a large hole filled with sea water. You can enter into the cave by boat or by swimming. It is believed that Odysseus swimmed to this cave when he was in a shipwreck and nymph Kalipso captured him and he stayed on island for 7 years. Later he was released by gods. But legend of Odysseus is attributed to Malta.
