Baska Voda - History
There are archaeological evidences showing that the area of Baska Voda has been inhabited about 4000 years BC and the main reason this region was inhabited in such a distant past was the source of fresh water. In the Bronze Age there were many tribal conflicts over the water and the pastures, and on the elevated ground in Gradina there are the ruins of a fortified drywall settlement.
In the Antique Age, in the place of present day Baska Voda there was the settlement of Aronia which is evident from the archaeological evidences found but also from a map called Tabula Peutingeriana that shows that settlement at this location. From the end of the 4th till the beginning of the 7th century the barbarians invaded this region often and so the people built a fort as a shelter and defense system on Gradina. Its ruins can still be seen today. Not far from Gradina were found many graves dating from the Antique Age with many objects such as jewelry, pots, glass pots, statues etc. The Romans and the Illyrians also lived in this region.
In the 7th century the Slavs occupied this region and the settlement of Aronia ceased to exist.
With the end of the pirate threats the people gradually started returning to the coastal area and started building homes here. Baska Voda was first mentioned in written records in 1688.
