Sinj's Alka is knight game organized each year in honor to victory against Turks. It is kept on first Sunday in August. Participants can be only men born in Cetina area. They have to be on a horse in full gallop carrying a spear and hit the center of iron circle which is called ring (alka). Ring is located on height of 3,2 m.
Church of Miraculous Lady of Sinj has a painting of Mother of God which is crowned with gold and silver. Church has bell-tower built in 1927. It is 43,5 m high. Sinj is one of the largest Croatian sanctuaries, which is celebrated on 15th of August.
Avenue of chestnut trees is located in street in which is Sinj's Alka kept. It was planted during World War I.
Old Town is located on a hill above town and has votive church on top. Old Town is remains of old fort. On a road leading to the church in Old Town are stations of the Cross.
Hill Kamicak is located in center of town and surrounded with walls. It also has a tower with a clock.
Luca is sculpture of a girl Luca who drinks water from source. It was made by sculptor Stipe Sikirica.
Monument to participant of Sinj's Alka was also built by Stipe Sikirica in 1965.
Fountain Petrovac was built in 1878. It gets water from source Miletin.
Large bridge over tributary of Cetina called Gorucica, was built in 1784. It has a board with incription: For decoration of Sinj, passenger comfort and benefit of trade.
Sculpture Three Generations was built by Ivo Filipovic Grcic. It is located in town park. It represents three Sinj men holding Alka (ring).
Palace Tripalo was built in 19th century. It is located in town center. Palace is protected cultural monument.
River Cetina is largest Central Dalmatian river. Its source is on 385 m of altitude near village Cetina. There are many archaeological findings along river Cetina. Cetina flows into Adriatic sea in town Omis. On Cetina are few hydropower plants: Peruce, Orlovac, Dale, Zakucac and Kraljevac.

Sinj - Location and Climate
Sinj (Central Dalmatia, Croatia) is a town located in region Central Dalmatia, in Split-Dalmatia County. Sinj is located on north-west side of Sinj's field. North and east side of town are surrounded by river Cetina.

You can get to Sinj by car by highway A1 and exit Dugopolje. From Dugopolje to Sinj it takes around 20 minutes. Sinj also has rent a car services and taxis.
Nearest airport is Airport Split located in settlement Kastel Stafilic.

Sinj - History
Area of Sinj has been inhabited since Neolithic.
In Sinj was born Roman general Sextus Minucius Faustin.
Until 13th century Sinj was under the rule of Bribir’s dukes Subics and in 14th century dukes Nelipic.
Sinj was occupied by Turks in 1516. and became only small town between Bosnia and sea. In 1648. when Venetian rule came back to Klis, Sinj became important Turkish defense point. On 25th of September 1686. providur Girolamo Cornaro finally occupied Sinj’s fort with 7000 soldiers.
In 1715. Turks again try to occupy Sinj but lost the battle. Sinj’s inhabitants attributed victory to Lady of Sinj. In honor of victory inhabitants organize each year knight game Alka known across the world. Sinj was under the rule of Venice until 1797.
After 1797. Sinj belonged to Austria and in 1805. to Napoleon. In 1813. Sinj was again under the rule of Austria until 1918.
Sinj became important military center in Dalmatia and in 19th century it was connected with Split with railroad.
In 1898. large earthquake hit Sinj and made a lot of damage.
In 1918. Sinj became part of new Kingdom of SHS.
Between two world wars Sinj developed cultural life.
In 1953. was opened town swimming pool.
