Podgora - History
Because of its convenient geographical location Podgora has been inhabited since ancient times. It has been mentioned in written documents for the first time in 1571. After the defeat of the Turks in the battle of Lepant Podgora came under the protection of the Venetian Republic. There are a few preserved tombstones dating from those times and also a cemetery.
Podgora has been mainly situated further up the mountain until the second half of the 20th century since the land there is more fertile because there is less sea salt in the air and soil but more importantly the mountain provided shelter from the pirates and raiders.
In 1962 there was a devastating earthquake that hit the area.
