Brela is a beautiful small tourist resort situated on the Makarska Riviera.
The crystal clear sea and six kilometers of long sandy beaches surrounded by the scent and beauty of thick pine forests is what Brela prides itself with. Brela - Attractions
The Church of St. Stjepan was constructed in 1897 in Donje Selo. St. Stjepan is the patron saint of Brela.
The Church of our Lady of Carmel also known as the Church of Lady of Victory has been constructed in 1715. It was built as a token of appreciation to God for victory against the Turks in baroque style.
The Church of St. Nikola dates from the 13th century.
The Church of Our Lady of Health (the older one) was built in the 17th century.
The Church of St. Ilija below Carevici was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century.
The Chapel of Our Lady at Dubci dates from the year 1870.
The tower in Poletnica dates from the 16th century.
The Turkish tower Zabrdom was constructed in the 17th century.

Brela - Location and Climate
Brela is a settlement and a Municipality belonging to the Split-Dalmatia County Its amazing natural beauties have made Brela become a famous tourist resort. It is situated on the far west end of the Makarska coast, 50 km from the town of Split and 15 from Makarska.
There are two settlements belonging to the Municipality of Brela: Brela and Gornja (Upper) Brela. The Municipality of Brela has a population of about 1705 permanent residents. The people are mostly engaged in tourism, but also in viticulture and olive growing.
The settlement Brela was earlier known as Donja (Lower) Brela. It is located at the foothills of the mountain Biokovo.
Brela is easily reached by car because it is located by the Adriatic state road D8.
The nearest airport is located in Split from where you can take the regular bus line number 37 that runs from the Split airport to (leaves every 20 minutes) to Split. From Split there are regular and frequent bus lines going to Brela or you can hire a car rental or take a taxi.

Brela - History
There are many ancient archaeological sites showing that this area has been inhabited since ancient history. The history of this region and of the settlement of Brela goes two millenniums back to the past.
Brela was first mentioned in 950 by the name of Beroyllia and as one of the four settlements that belonged to the Neretva's principality of Paganija.

The Illyrian-Roman god of forests and untouched nature named Silvan was the first patron of Berylliae (in Antique Age).
