Viganj - History
Viganj has been first mentioned in written documents in the registry book of Republic of Dubrovnik in 1336 even though it is much older since the archaeological findings show that Viganj, just as Nakovana, has been inhabited even during the Neolithic period. Its previous names in the past were Vigel and Vighen.
The Illyrians from Nakovana built many fortified guard-houses on top of hills above Viganj and on the narrowest part of Peljesac channel, cape St. Ivan for gaining better control over the channel.
The Roman war veterans were gifted with estates as a token of gratitude for their deeds during the Roman rule, and on those estates they built their summer houses called villa rusticae (village villas). The ruins of about ten of these villa rusticas can be seen on an area from St. Ivan in Viganj to Trstenica in Orebic. They did not have defensive walls since at that time the Romans lived in peace and there was no fear of pirate attacks. A lid of sarcophagus dating from the 1st century and a few amphorae are another valuable evidence of the presence of Romans.
Viganj has flourished the most with the rapid development of maritime affairs in the beginning of the 17th century to that extent that at one point all the men of Viganj were at sailors at sea, and 177 of them have become captains.
