You can also go on individual trips by boat rentals with skipper to nearby places like island Vis, Split or island Brac. There are many beautiful sights that you should visit on island Hvar and nearby islands and mainland places.
There are towns Makarska and Omis, city of Split and historical town Trogir. You can visit famous beach Zlatni Rat in Bol on island Brac, or Blue cave on island Bisevo not far from island Vis. The parish Church of St. Juraj was built in the year 1897 in neo-Romanesque style. Watching from the air it has a shape of a cross. In the yard of the church there can be seen the foundations of the older Church of St. Juraj that was mentioned in the Croatian statute in 1331.
The Franciscan Monastery was most probably constructed in the 9th century. This monastery is the oldest best preserved building in Sucuraj.
The Church of St. Ante is a baroque church built in 1663 by the refugees that fled from the Turkish invasion during the 16th and the 17th century.
The fort Fortica was built in the year 1613 after the Turks robbed and burnt down Sucuraj three times. During the Venetian-Turkish wars Sucuraj was located on the bordering area between three states: Venetian Republic, Ottoman Empire and Dubrovnik Republic. The fort was equipped with cannons and had permanent military personnel. It was badly damaged during the Second World War in an Anglo-American bombing of Sucuraj and it was completely demolished.
The lighthouse Sucuraj was built in 1889 and it is still functional today. Near it there was an even older lighthouse from the beginning of the 19th century but it was destroyed in the Second World War.
The statue of St. Nikola was placed in 2003 on a pier that was constructed in 1870. St. Nikola is the patron saint of sailors, travelers and fishermen.
The statues in the small park in the center of Sucuraj where placed there in 1999. There can be seen three statues: one of a woman holding a fish, stone water drops and a monument to the old school.
The monument to the victims of the 2nd world war was placed in Sucuraj in 1966 as this place was badly hurt during the war.
The stone cross with an altar was built in 1991 and blessed on the feast day of St. Ante.
The old graveyard was built in 1923 and expanded in the 70ies and 80ies and the new graveyard is located between the settlement and the lighthouse.
Around Sucuraj there are numerous smaller chapels:

- the Chapel of St. Nikola,
- the Chapel of Spiridijun,
- the Chapel of St. Mihovil,

Sucuraj (island Hvar) - Location and Climate
Sucuraj is a Municipality on island Hvar, located in Croatian region of Central Dalmatia. It is located on east coast of island Hvar, 77 km far from town Hvar. Sucuraj is located 5 km far from mainland (3 NM).
Sucuraj is situated on area of 44,65 km2. You can get to Sucuraj by car, boat, train, bus or airplane. If you are coming to airplane, train or car you should come to Split first and then take a ferry to island Hvar, or you can come to Drvenik, south of town Makarska and take a ferry directly to Sucuraj.
Bus and train station and ferry port in Split are very close so you can use any kind of transportation to get to Split. If you are coming with a car you should take a highway A1 Zagreb-Split and exit in Dugopolje.
If you are coming to Drvenik, you should take a highway A1 and exit for Drvenik. Then you should take state road to Drvenik (56 km). You can also come to Drvenik by state road from Split (90 km). Time of traveling with ferry from Drvenik to Sucuraj is 25 minutes. Ferry runs 10-15 times a day during the summer.
Most fun and fastest way to get to Sucuraj on island Hvar is by private boat transfers from Split. You can also rent a boat for private trips and water activities like cruising, diving and swimming.
Sucuraj has around 490 inhabitants. Inhabitants are mostly directed to olive and vine growing, fishing, agriculture and tourism. Sucuraj has fishing fleet consisted of 10 larger ships. In a bay Mrtnovik is fish farm.
There are also two oil mills in Sucuraj. Inhabitants are also directed to beekeeping and make quality honey. Municipality Sucuraj is consisted of 3 settlements: Sucuraj, Bogomolje and Selca at Bogomolje. Municipality Sucuraj was established on 25.04.1811. by decree of Napoleon.

Sucuraj (island Hvar) - History
Sucuraj is over 2300 years old. First inhabitants of Sucuraj were Illyrians. Illyrian queen Teuta had a castle in Sucuraj. Croatis came to Sucuraj in 7th and 8th century. Many nations and rulers ruled in Sucuraj: Neretva principality, Dalmatian Kingdom of Croatia, Romans, Venetians, Austrians, Italians...
There are remains of two Roman settlements in Sucuraj. One settlement used to be in Gornja Banda and the other in bay Mlaska. Both settlements were destroyed in Turkish attacks. Sucuraj was three times burned and robbed. First time in 1526. by Turks, second time in 1539. by Turks, third time in 1571. also by Turks. In 1613. Venetians built a fort for defense of Sucuraj.
It has 10 cannons and permanent military garrison. During the Napoleon rule, Municipality Sucuraj was established, public lighting is installed and new graveyard was built (today's old graveyard).
Also, road to town Hvar was constructed. After the World War I, Sucuraj was under Italian rule until 1921. when it became part of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. After World War II, Sucuraj had to renovate again. In 1963. was established first ferry line Sucuraj-Drvenik. Ferry was called Tratica.
Last time Sucuraj was striked during the Patriot War which started in 1991. In 1991. Sucuraj became part of independent Republic of Croatia. Oldest building in Sucuraj is Augustine monastery which used to be Franciscan monastery.
The exact year of construction is unknown, but it was first time reconstructed in 1309. and last time in 1994. Sucuraj was named by church of St. George. In 1655. in Sucuraj was built monument written in Croatian Cyrillic.
