Sumet used to be called Juncetum which means sedge or reed.

In 1100. was built church of St. Martin.

Church of St. Vid was built in 1211. but it was demolished in 20th century when railroad to Gruz was built.

Church of St. Cosmas and Damian is located in settlement Knezica where go inhabitants of Sumet for Sunday mass.

Water supply was built in 15th century for town Dubrovnik and it passed through Sumet.

During Homeland war in 1991. Sumet was robbed and burned.
