Lopud (island Lopud) - Tourism
Lopud is one of the islands belonging to the Elafiti Archipelago located in the south Adriatic. It is one of the three inhabited islands (Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan) of the same Archipelago located only a few nautical miles from the town of Dubrovnik. It is a small green oasis of peace and tranquility and an ideal destination for a peaceful and relaxing vacation while at the same time being in the vicinity of one of the world’s most desirable destinations- the city of Dubrovnik.
On the northwest coast of the island is located the village of Lopud facing island Sipan.
There is no better invitation to the tourists than the picture of Lopud’s beautiful beaches layered with white sand and crystal clear and clean waters.
This island is very tranquil as there is no traffic noise or air pollution since Lopud cannot be reached by car and cars are not allowed at all. The coastline of Lopud is 11.5 km long and beautiful sand beaches stretch along the length of 1.2 km. The bay Sunj is particularly known for the white sand beach suitable for children as the sea gets deeper very slowly and gradually.

Lopud (island Lopud) - History
In the past Lopud was the seat of one of the republic’s vice-rectors and had a population of about 4000 people. Dubrovnik’s merchant fleet had its base here and the ruins of palaces that belonged to the ship-owners of those times can still be seen around the island’s only village. The tradition of tourism here started very early and can be traced back to the year 1920 when the hotels located on the island were used by the Italians to intern Jews from Dubrovnik and Bosnia in 1942.
There is a fortified monastery in the village of Lopud that was built by the Franciscans in 1483. Unfortunately today it is mostly derelict.
