The fort Fortica testifies to the pirates’ history of this town as well as the fort Mirabella. Fort Fortica is located atop the hill Omiska Dinara since the whole area of sea and land was easily supervised from that location. From the fort there is a great view of the entire town, the canyon of river Cetina and the islands of Brac, Hvar and Solta. Fortica was mainly used as a shelter and in case of the town being surrounded by enemies they would throw huge rocks from the fort at the city destroying the town but also the enemy. The fort can be reached by a marked track and it takes about 20 minute walk from the town on foot through the settlement of Baucici.
The Fort Mirabella is located in a protected area and it dates from the 13th century. The other constructions in this old part of Omis date from the 16th to 19th century and were mostly built in Renaissance style. The role of the fort Mirabella was guarding the old town and watching out for enemies as from the fort there is a view of the whole part of the town as well as of the whole Brac canal. The fort is made of four floors and an exit to the top of the fort that offers a spectacular view.
The Parish Church in Omis is dedicated to St. Mihovil and was built by the beginning of the 17th century. The bell-tower of the church was completed in the 18th century. The church was built by the local architects and combines the Goth, Renaissance and early Baroque styles. On the walls of the church can be seen the coats of arms of Venetian nobles and of the town of Omis.
The Church of St. Roko was constructed on the location of an older Goth church dating from 1585. It is a late Renaissance building that was located by the city’s loggia where public assemblies were held. The church is a spacious one nave construction.
The Church of St. Peter is located on the right side of the river Cetina and was first mentioned in 1704 during the rule of the king Slavac. Near the church there were Benedictine and Franciscan monasteries.
The Franciscan Monastery was built in 1716. The church near the monastery was built in 1714.
The Illyrian seminary was established in 1750 by the Archbishop of Split. It was expanded in the 19th century.
The Church of St. Jure was erected on the location of an ancient fort above the estuary of river Cetina. It is a one nave church with a semicircular apse.

Omis - History
The town of Omis was first mentioned by the name of Oneum or Onaeum. In the antique age the settlement was situated further north from the present location of Omis. The name has its origin in the Slavic word Holm/Hum which is a translation of the Illyric-Greek word Onaion/Oneon which means a hill or a place on a hill.
In the middle ages Omis was called Olmissium/Almivssium during the Venetian rule. In this period piracy was very common was of acquirement of possessions and the people of Omis well-known pirates who were attacking the merchant ships of Venice, Dubrovnik, Split, Kotor and many more for full two centuries.
After Ladislav Napuljski sold Dalmatia to the Venetian Republic in 1409 Omis remained under its rule until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797, after which it was ruled by Austrians until 1805. From 1805 to 1813 Napoleon had this region under his domain and after him Austrians came back and remained here until the end of the First World War.

The ships of the pirates of Omis were called Sagittas which means the arrow. They were designed for attacks and fast retrieval to the estuary of River Cetina and for protecting Almissa.
There is an inscription on the lintel of a Renaissance palace of Omis that demonstrates how much the people of Omis love their town and living here. The inscription says: ‘GRATIAS AGO TIBI DOMINE QUIA FUI IN HOC MUNDO’ and means: ‘Thanks be to Thee o Lord that I have lived on this Earth.
