Fort Royal was built during Napoleon times in 1806. It was also used during rule of Austria.
Memorial cross for sailors was built in honor of killed sailors in shipwreck of Austrian-Hungarian ship Triton.
Botanical garden on island Lokrum has around 600 different species. It was founded in 1959. and opened for public in 1967. During the Homeland war over 49 missiles were dropped on it.

It is believed that name of island Lokrum comes from Latin word acrumen which means sour fruit. Island used to have many sour wild orange trees.
Documented period of island Lokrum starts in 1023. when Dubrovnik's archbishop Vital gave island Lokrum to priest Lav and Benedictine Peter. They built monastery on island Lokrum.
In 1667. was large earthquake which destroyed many buildings in Dubrovnik and on island Lokrum. In 1691. monastery was dissoluted and in 1798. also was abbey.
In 1859. archduke Maximilian Ferdinand von Habsburg bought island Lokrum. He built his summer house on island Lokrum with beautiful gardens.
During World War I on island was nursing home for children.

Traditional story says that English king Richard Lion Heart got to island Lokrum during the storm and gave large amount of money for construction of a church as a sign of gratitude.
