Polace (island Mljet) - History
Polace was named after Roman palace and it is one of the oldest settlements on island Mljet. Romans built a palace in 3rd century.
Polace were inhabited until 11th century when Benedictines came to island and forbade inhabiting.
Polace started to develop again in 19th century.
There are remains that testify that in Polace was grain cultivation.
In second half of 20th century Polace started to develop tourism. Port was built and soon it became main port for National park Mljet.

Polace (island Mljet) - Interesting Facts
Legend says that Roman palace in Polace was built by Agezilaj from Anazarba in Cilicia. He came to island Mljet with his son after Roman emperor banished him from the court. Emperor Caracalla freed them after Agezilaj’s son gave him a song he wrote about fishing and beauty of the sea. They refused to go back to Rome and send the emperor a branch from pine tree with bird nest and a shell.
