Settlement Okuklje is situated in Mljet canal between island Mljet and peninsula Peljesac. Canal is 8 km wide. Mljet canal is protected from south winds, but northern winds bora and mistral can be very strong.

Okuklje (island Mljet) - History
Settlement Okuklje was founded during times of Dubrovnik Republic. Many inhabitants from inland settlements moved to the coast when pirating was stopped.
Okuklje was mentioned in written documents in 1414., 1500. and in 1503.
Okuklje developed as port where from merchants went every day to Dubrovnik to sell their products wine, fish, wood, oil.
Pirating attacks started again in 17th century. Okuklje was attacked a lot during Candian war between 1645. and 1669.
In 1693. the priest's servant told pirates where inhabitants keep their treasures and money. Pirates attacked and burnt entire village. Priest and some inhabitants managed to escape to settlement Korita.
Inhabitants moved back to Okuklje after World War II when inhabitants of settlement Maranovici in inland moved here again.
