Makarska - History
The first inhabitants of the area where Makarska is located today were the Illyrians who formed a settlement called Muccurum in the 4th century.
Makarska was first mentioned in written records in a document dating from the 16th century.
The great battle of Makarska took place on September 18th 887 between the Venetian Republic and the Neretva Principality. The people of Neretva won the battle. After the fall of the Ottoman empire Makarska fell under the rule of the Venetian Republic and later of the Habsburg Monarchy.
By the beginning of the 19th century Napoleon took over Makarska and he ensouraged cultural development and built roads that connected Makarska to the other coastal settlements. A monument to Napoleon was built at the west entrance to the town. Even though Napoleon is to be thanked for the cultural development and the traffic connection of Makarska to the other cities, it was the Austro-Hungarian rule that started developing tourism in this region.
