Povlja is part of Municipality Selca, which is consisted of settlements: Selca, Povlja, Novo Selo and Sumartin. Povlja has around 360 inhabitants which are mostly directed to agriculture, fishing, tourism and stone processing.
Tourism in Povlja has been developing more since the 60s of the 20th century, but first visitors of Povlja were Czech entrepreneurs working on recover of oil refinery.
Today Povlja with settlements Sumartin and Selca-Puntinak offers accommodation in private houses, apartments and rooms with more than 1000 beds.
Povlja is surrounded by many bays such as Ticja luka, Tatinja, Luke, Smokvica, Travna and many other. Povlja is ideal for family vacations and group or private boat excursions from Split of Hvar.
It offers beautiful nature, clean beaches with clear sea, restaurants with famous Dalmatian and Brac's specialities, water activities and night life.
Night life on island Brac is mostly consisted of disco and cocktail clubs on and near the famous beaches. Most known are disco club Faces in Bol and night club Lana in Supetar.
For nearby excursions you can choose between different water transfers: rent a boat, ferry or private boat transfers to island Hvar or Split.

The Church of St. john the Baptist was buit in the place of an early Christian three-nave Basilica dating from the 5th century. The grave of St. John Povaljski was in the Basilica until the Venetians stole his body and kept it as their trophey in the church of san Giovanni Elemosinarion in Rialta.
The Benedictine Glagolithic monastery dates from the 11th century. It was devastated in the Venetian attack in 1145 and rebuilt in 1184.
Bol is situated 28 km from Povlja and there guests can visit one of the most famous beaches of the Adriatic called Zlatni rat or the Golden Cape.
Because of its extraordinary beauty it is one of the most famous symbols of tourism in Croatia.

Povlja (island Brac) - Location and Climate
Povlja is settlement on north coast of island Brac, located in region of Central Dalmatia, Croatia. Povlja is located 10 km north of Sumartin and 40 km east of Supetar.
You can get to Povlja by airplane to airport Brac or to airport Split and then take ferry, private boat transfers or catamaran Split-Supetar or Makarska-Sumartin. Povlja (island Brac) - History
Name Povlja comes from Latin verb Paulia (vallis) which means a bay. Benedictine monastery was founded in 11th century, destroyed in 12th century and again renewed at the end of the 12th century.
Povlja was first mentioned in the 5th century when the Basilica was built here.
