First Slavic settlement on island Mljet was Vrhmljece, but when pirate attacks stopped, inhabitants moved to the coast and formed settlement Okuklje.

Some inhabitants built settlement 500 m far from Church of St. Mary of Hill. Marin Pribojevic was most significant person in purchase of this land. In 16th century new settlement was called Lokvice.

In 80s of 16th century plague appeared in Lokvice and inhabitants moved to fertile field where they formed settlement Maranovici, which was named after Ratko Maranovic. Field was called Maransko field.

Settlement Maranovici developed fast and it had its own judges.

Inhabitants are mostly directed to agriculture because of the fertile field. New inhabitants are also directed to tourism. Former inhabitants were also directed to fishing and they built a port in a bay north of settlement, today Okuklje.
