Tourism started to develop in Vela Luka and island Korcula in 19th century. It has beautiful nature and many historical sights which conducive to tourism development. Accommodation is offered in hotels, private houses and apartments and family hotels.
You can also stay in camps: Mindel, Potirna... Camp Mindel is located 5 km far from Vela Luka center. Vela Luka has around 1000 registered beds in private accommodation. The ideal accommodation is in old stone houses within the sea or in small bays around Vela Luka.

The Church of St. John on Gradina was constructed in the 15th century. Near the church can be seen the ruins of the ancient defensive walls, and there were also found many fragments of Roman ceramics.
The Church of St. Joseph was built in 1846. It is a three nave church made in late classicism style.
The Church of St. Jure is located in Potirna and was built on a high hill. It has small dimensions and was built in a rectangular shape without an apse. It was mentioned in the cadaster of properties of the Korcula Municipality in 1427.
The Church of St. Kuzma and Damjan is a Romanesque church built on the location of the Roman villae rusticate. It is a small one nave church considered to be early medieval or early Christians but also antique. The church was slightly renovated on one occasion which explains the Goth details.
The Church of St. Peter is located a little further from Vela Luka in a beautiful cove of Tre Porti. It is one of the rare churches on Korcula that has a porch. On one of the pillars there is an inscription: Don Ivan Seman 1900 which is the year when the church was renovated. It is a small church without an apse.
The Church of St. Rok was constructed on the cemetery of Vela Luka in 1839. It is an octagonal building made of beautifully carved stone.
The Church of St. Vincenc located in the center of Vela Luka and was built in 1589 by a member of a wealthy noble family Ismaeli from Korcula. The church is very small and almost unnoticeable among the buildings surrounding it now. It is a pity that this significant historical monument is not better exposed and surrounded by greenery and free space which would give it a historic significance it rightly deserves.
The Church of Our Lady of Karmel is located in a picturesque location a little away from Vela Luka by the fertile fields of vineyards. It is surrounded by lush greenery and cypress. The church is built of stone but it is mortared both outside and within. It was constructed in Goth style in 1888.
The Church of Our Lady of Mercy is a church also located a little away from Vela Luka in an area called Knezina. It is a family votive church constructed by the beginning of the 20th century.
The Church of Our Lady of Health was built in 1886 also as a votive church at a time when plague ravaged Korcula and vela Luka.
The archaeological locality of Vela Spila is located on the southern slopes of the hill Pinski rat, above the bay Kale.
Hum is a viewpoint and an abandoned military fort. From here there is a beautiful view of a great part of the Adriatic.
Lumbarda is situated 45 km from Vela Luka. It is well-known for its fantastic sand beaches:

- the beach Bilin zal and
- Tatinja beach.

Illiryans lived in this area in 1st and 2nd millennium BC. Roman inhabitants brought culture and literacy to this area. Since 8th century, island and Vela Luka have been inhabited by Neretvans. They were fighting for centuries with Venetians for rule in this area. Modern Vela Luka started to develop in 18th century. Trade and traffic started to develop and many people inhabited Vela Luka.
Public school was founded in 1857., post office has been opened since 1885., first factory of canned fish has been built in 1898. Vela Luka became independent municipality in 1898. First chief was Tadija Tabain-Santic. Day of Municipality Vela Luka has been celebrated on 19th of March, Day of St. Joseph. During the World War II many Jews found shelter in Vela Luka. In 1948. shipyard Greben was built.
At the end of 20th century many hotels and private accommodation have been built. Agriculture and trade have been more developed, many roads and infrastructure have been built. Today Vela Luka is very important traffic, cultural, economy and tourist destination.
