Ston - Attractions
The Ston Wall is the longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. It started being constructed in 1358 when Peljesac came under the domain of Dubrovnik and the building of it was completed by the end of the 15th century. This has been one of the largest construction projects of that time. The wall is protected by 40 towers and 5 forts of which the strongest one is Bartolomija placed at the highest point. It was named after the saint protector of arms. The wall has a total length of 5.5 km and goes across the hill in a double row.
The salt work in Ston is the oldest one in Europe and possibly in the world and one of the three that exist in Croatia. It was built in 1360 when Ston was bought by the Republic of Dubrovnik. A defensive wall was built around it. Pools named by different Christian saints divide the salt work (all but one which is called Munda) and it is an amazing fact that the way this salt work produces salt has not changed over the ages- the outstanding ecological salt is produced with the combining force of the sun, wind and human power.
From Mali Ston guests can go and visit the oyster farm located in the bay of Mali Ston by boat. The oyster farming here has existed since the time this area was under the Roman rule and the first written documents mentioning the hunting for sea shells date from the 16th century. Controlled farming has been first mentioned in the 17th century.
In and around Ston there are numerous valuable archaeological sites such as the ruins of the Napoleon road and a great deal of old sacral architecture of churches, chapels a monastery. Above Ston in the mount Porace massif there is an archaeological site located in the Gudnja cave some 400 m above sea level. This cave which was once inhabited by humans and the pottery as well as the other archaeological findings found here can be seen in the Archaeological museum in Ston.
Korcula is one of the most beautiful islands in Croatia, and boat rental is a great and fast way to reach this gem of Adriatic and spare a lot of time vs going by ferry. Private boat transfers and group or private boat excursions can also be easily arranged for a tour of the islands of Brac and Hvar as well as for a one day trip to the town of Split.
Another fun way to spend a day here is to go wine tasting on Peljesac. Guests will find the wines of Peljesac to be quite exquisite which can be attributed to the hundred year old tradition of producing and growing wine on a carefully chosen sand soil in a position where it obtains the maximum amount of sunlight. The wine is then stored in traditional oak barrels for gaining that particular taste.
