The Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary is one of the most important and most famous monuments of Zaostrog and the whole coastal area of Makarska because, according to the Turkish document dating from 1671 the monastery existed since the ancient times at the border of the seven kingdoms.
The monastery was most probably built by the beginning of the 15th century by the hermit monks of St. Augustin who left Zaostrog in 1463 after the fall of Bosnia.
The fort Ostrog is located high up the hill under the peak called Mali Viter and is one of the four fortified cities of Pagania mentioned by the emperor Constantin Porfirogenet.
The Church of St. Barbara is an old Goth church and there is also one newer church of the same name dating from 1872.
The Church of St. Roko dates from the 17th century.
The dock in Zaostrog was built during the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Dalmatia.

Zaostrog - History
According to the archaeological findings, the village of Zaostrog has been inhabited since the Roman times. Some of the findings include the relief of god Mitra and the tombstone of Aurelie Veturi that is kept in the Monastery’s collection.
In the past Zaostrog was the stronghold of the medieval dukes of Neretva. In the 15th century Zaostrog was under the rule of the feudal lords Vlatkovici-Jurjevici who had a fortified city on the mountain Viter above Zaostrog.
Zaostrog was first mentioned in 1494 in written records both in Croatian and Turkish language. The people of Zaostrog started moving closer to the sea in the 17th century and after an earthquake in 1962 they left the old village and started developing tourism in their new settlement by the sea.
The Croatians inhabited Zaostrog in the 7th century.
