Town Hvar and island Hvar in general is one of the most attractive and most visited tourist destinations in Croatia. It is famous for many reasons, such as beautiful nature, clean and clear sea, night life, rich gastronomy, many cultural and historical monuments, beautiful buildings, group or private boat excursions to many beautiful islands and attractions...
Tourism on island Hvar started to develop in 1868. when Hygienic society was founded and started to encouraged tourism development. Tourism on island Hvar started as rural tourism, then it developed to pilgrim tourism and today it is tourism in general.
Hvar was also developing medical tourism. First medical hotel was finished in 1903. at the location of former Rector's Palace. It was called Medical-hotel of Queen Elizabeth. It has 26 rooms.
First Hvar Guide was printed in Trst in 1899. In 1903. Hvar Guide had colored front page and pictures. Between 1921. and 1941. many tourist contents were built: beaches, promenades, hotels, public infrastructure...
During the 60's many hotels were built and expand their offer and contents. Mass tourism was at it's top during the 70's. During the 80's tourism and revenues are in decline and tourist offer is poorer. In 1986. hotels in Hvar, Jelsa and Stari Grad were united into Suncani Hvar (Sunny Hvar).
Most critical time was during the Patriotic war from 1991.-1995. While visiting town Hvar, you can stay in many beautiful, modern and traditional hotels, private houses and apartments. Hosts also offer many traditional homemade meals, wines, brandies and oils.
Day of town Hvar is celebrated on 2nd of October. Protector of town Hvar is St. Stephen I.
Literary manifestation Meeting Cakavian Poetry has been kept since 2004. It is dedicated to poetry in Cakavian dialect written by women.
In 2009. procession Za krizem was listed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
