Dugi Rat - History
The villages of Jesenice, Zeljovici, Krug and Duce are the oldest settlements of the Municipality of Dugi Rat and are situated at 200-250m above the sea level on the slopes of the mountain. Presently they are very much desolated as the residents started moving closer to the coastline, particularly in the last thirty years because of the fast development of tourism.
The existence of life in this area since the Stone Age is shown by the archaeological findings found in the Turska Cave and Ponistrice prove and the forts and agglomerates from the late Bronze and Iron Age indicate that this region has been inhabited continuously. The forts were constructed at high grounds by the inhabitants to ease the supervision of the area.
The Benedictine Monastery of St. Peter in the village (Sumpetar) has been constructed in two instances in 1080 and in 1911. The ruins of an Early Christian Basilica were also found at that location.
The people of Poljice acknowledged the rule of the Austrians after the Venetian Republic fell in 1797 in an attempt to preserve their rights and privileges, but after the Peace declaration made in 1805 the French came to rule Poljica. In an attempt to save the Republic from the French, the people started a rebellion but it was quickly smothered.
The people started directing their lives to maritime traffic with the construction of the road connecting Split to Omis and docks for steamships were also built in Krilo, Mali Rat and Orije. That had a large effect on the increased migration of the population from the hinterland to the coastline.
Dugi Rat is experiencing a fast development of this coastal area as more and more people are engaged in tourism.
