Govedari is a small beautiful settlement situated on the most forested island of the Adriatic- the island of Mljet. It is located within the area of the National Park Mljet, inland of the island. Govedari is an ideal destination for those looking for a serene vacation as there are only a few houses here, a parish church and the National Park administration.

National Park Mljet lies on the west part of the island Mljet and covers about a third of its surface. It has been declared a National Park in 1960 because of the unique indented coastline and numerous reefs, cliffs and islets and a rich array of hills rising steeply above the surface of the sea and sheltering numerous karts fields and ancient stone settlements. Its south coast is very steep with many collapsed caves. The Large and Small Lake are salt water lakes and represent a unique geological and oceanographic phenomenon that is very significant on a world scale. These lakes were fresh water lakes some 10 000 years ago.
The island of St. Mary located in the Large Lake is a home to a Benedictine monastery built in the 12th century. An extremely powerful spiritual and cultural dimension and the beauty of this island have made it the symbol of Mljet.
In Polace there can be seen the ruins of a Roman palace with fortification around it as well as early Christian Basilicas.

It belongs to the Mljet Municipality and the Dubrovnik-Neretva County and has a population of about 165 permanent residents who are mainly engaged in agriculture, viticulture and olive growing. Govedari is the only settlement within the National Park Mljet that is not located by the sea and because of the distance from the sea the Govedari has not developed in tourism.

Govedari (island Mljet) - History
The settlement of Govedari was formed by the end of the 18th century and there is a document dating from April 8th 1793 that states that the monks from the St. Mary’s monastery made an agreement with Vicko Basta from Babino Polje and the brothers Nikola and Petar Milic about inhabiting the area above the field of Pomjenta which made them the first inhabitants of Govedari. The settlement started growing with the arrival of new immigrants from Babino Polje.
The Roman-Catholic Parish of Govedari has been established in 1897 and comprises of the settlements of Govedari, Polace, Babine Kuce, Njivice, Soline and Pomena.
