Town Hvar and island Hvar in general is one of the most attractive and most visited tourist destinations in Croatia. It is famous for many reasons, such as beautiful nature, clean and clear sea, night life, rich gastronomy, many cultural and historical monuments, beautiful buildings, group or private boat excursions to many beautiful islands and attractions...
Tourism on island Hvar started to develop in 1868. when Hygienic society was founded and started to encouraged tourism development. Tourism on island Hvar started as rural tourism, then it developed to pilgrim tourism and today it is tourism in general.
Hvar was also developing medical tourism. First medical hotel was finished in 1903. at the location of former Rector's Palace. It was called Medical-hotel of Queen Elizabeth. It has 26 rooms.
First Hvar Guide was printed in Trst in 1899. In 1903. Hvar Guide had colored front page and pictures. Between 1921. and 1941. many tourist contents were built: beaches, promenades, hotels, public infrastructure...
During the 60's many hotels were built and expand their offer and contents. Mass tourism was at it's top during the 70's. During the 80's tourism and revenues are in decline and tourist offer is poorer. In 1986. hotels in Hvar, Jelsa and Stari Grad were united into Suncani Hvar (Sunny Hvar).
Most critical time was during the Patriotic war from 1991.-1995. While visiting town Hvar, you can stay in many beautiful, modern and traditional hotels, private houses and apartments. Hosts also offer many traditional homemade meals, wines, brandies and oils.

Cathedral of St. Stephen I is dedicated to St. Stephen pope and martyr. Cathedral is located on square of St. Stephen in center of town Hvar. It was built on remains of Benedictine monastery of St. Mary. Today's look cathedral got in 17th and 18th century. Construction of bell-tower started in 16th century. It was finished in 1549. Cathedral was built in mixed styles: Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and mannerism. Organs in the cathedral were built by Dominik Moscatelli in 1786. Organs were removed in 20th century and kept in County museum in Sibenik.
Pjaca is main square in town Hvar. It is actually called square of St. Stephen. It is the largest square in Dalmatia. It used to be deep bay and later border between northern town Grod and southern town Burgo. In center of square Pjaca is well from 1529. In 1780. Pjaca was paved.
First Arsenal was built between 1292. and 1331. In 16th century new Arsenal was built but it was demolished by Turks. In 1611. it was renovated and has today’s look. Fontik (warehouse for grain) was built on north side in 1612. and in above Fontik is oldest theater in Europe.
Church of St. Spirit was built in 15th century. It was dedicated in 1494. On bell-tower is oldest Hvar's bell from 1487.
Hvar's theater is located on second floor of Arsenal. On transom is incription: ANNO SECVNDO PACIS MDCXII. Auditorium was built in 1803.
Construction of town fort started in 1278. In 1551. new fort was built on remains of old one and it served for protection of inhabitants during Turkish attacks in 1571. In 1579. it was damaged in thunderstroke. It was renovated in 17th century.
Church of St. Mary was built in 15th century. Inside are altars from 16th century, tomb of poet Hanibal Lucic and statue of Our Lady with Child.
Town walls are connected with fort Fortica on north side of town Hvar. Construction started in 13th century and was finished in 15th century. East gates are called Porta Badoer or as locals call it Town gates. Within the walls was tower with clock. It was connected with Ducal palace which was demolished in 19th century.
Church of St. Nicholas was built in Gothic style in 14th or 15th century. Today is preserved shrine which is chapel of Our Lady of Sorrow.
Monastery and Church of St. Marko was first time mentioned in 1312. Today's remains come from 15th and 16th century.
Palace Paladini was built in floral Gothic style in 15th century by knight Nikola Paladini.
Palace Uzicic was built around 1463. on ruins of old church from 14th century.
Monastery of Benedictines was built in 1664. Family of Hanibal Lucic left it to Benedictines in 1591. Within the monastery is church of St. Anthony of Opat and John the Baptist and collection of lace made of agava cactus threads. Lace is listed on UNESCO's list of intangible heritabe.
Town loggia was first time mentioned in 1289. but it was old loggia. New loggia was built in 16th century. Loggia was also burned in fire in 1571. when Turks attacked the town. During Venetian rule inside the loggia were kept public auctions, and it had ball room.
Ducal Palace was built during Venetian rule. Palace was built in 14th century. It was surrounded with 4 towers, and east tower had a clock. In 1571. palace was burned and in 16th century new one was built. During Venetian rule in palace lived duke and it was administrative center. In 1903. palace was demolished totally and hotel was built in its place.

Port of town Hvar has always been idea for sailors and ships because it is located in a protected bay. It is protected also with Pakleni islands which are across town Hvar.
In caves Markova and Grapceva was found oldest ship display on ceramis vase.
Illyrians were first inhabitants of town Hvar in 1st century BC.
Greeks populated area of town Stari Grad in 4th century BC and formed town Pharos.
From 2nd till 5th century in today's town Hvar Romans had port and settlement. They called it Pharia.
In Middle Ages Croats change name into Hvar.
Between 8th and 13th century in town Hvar was monastery of St. Mary and town was called Lesna.
In 11th century town Hvar became part of state of Croatia.
In 1147. in town Stari Grad was headquarters of Hvar's Diocese.
In 1278. Venetians moved island's center from town Stari Grad to town Hvar, which also becomes center of Hvar's Diocese.
From 1420.-1797. Hvar was important center and port during Venetian Empire. Hvar developed culturally. First Hvar's theater was established in 1612.
On 6th of February 1510. miracle happened in Hvar. Wooden cross cried tears. This was the beginning of traditional procession on island Hvar called Za krizem.
From 1510.-1514. on island Hvar Matija Ivanic led uprising of the Hvar commoners. The uprising was suppressed by Venice.
In 1571. island Hvar was attacked by Turks. In 1579. gunpowder exploded in town fort.
In 1797. Austria ruled on island until 1805. when France and Napoleon occupied this area. Their rule ended in 1813. when again Austria ruled.
First meteorological station in Croatia was opened in Hvar in 1858.
In 1868. Prominent inhabitants of town Hvar founded The Hygienic Association Hvar which was first touristic association.
In 1900. was opened hotel of Queen Elizabeth where today is hotel Palace.
From 1921.-1941. Hvar was part of Kingdom Yugoslavia. Many inhabitants moved to foreign countries because of poverty. During these years tourism started to develop more and first bathing area was opened. After World War II tourism in Hvar was developing even more.
In 1991. Hvar is part of independent Republic of Croatia and it offered shelter for refugees of Homeland war.
In 1991. island Hvar was divided into 4 Municipalities: town Hvar, Jelsa, Sucuraj and Stari Grad.
