Kuciste - History
The numerous archaeological findings located in various caves on Peljesac indicate that the area of Peljesac has been inhabited since the Neolithic.
An Illyrian shrine has been found in one cave near the hamlet of Nakovane. Illyrians were engaged in cattle breeding and armed conflicts were frequent in an attempt to get the best pastures for their cattle.
During the Middle Ages the borders changed often and many claimed Peljesac as their own. Slavs started inhabiting this area and especially its western part with the weakening of the Roman Empire.
Peljesac came under the rule of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1326 which ruled this region until the French occupied and abolished the republic of Dubrovnik in 1808.
