Lastovo (island Lastovo) - History
Lastovo has been first mentioned by lexicographer Stephen of Byzantium in written records. Lastovo was first called Ladesta and Ladeston, and these names were given to it in the 4th century BC by Theopompus. It can be assumed that Lastovo has been named by the ancient Illyrians which is indicated by the suffix –est in the name. The island has also been inhabited by the Dorians which is indicated by the Greek version of the name of Ladestanos. The Romans gave it a Latin name of Augusta Insula, which means The Royal Island. Its present name is formed of the Roman form Lasta with the Slavic suffix –ovo attached to it.
The oldest traces of life here were found in Raca Cave on Lastovo. The continuity of life here can be traced back to the Early Bronze Age.
Slavs started inhabiting the island in the 7th and 8th century along with the people from the Neretva valley. The Venetian ships were threatened by their presence which is why Doge Pietro II Orseolo attacked the island in 998 and completely devastated the village. The survivors of this attack moved to the new location of today’s village Lastovo.
The Lastovo had a very violent and turbulent history.
Lastovo was under the Italian rule until the year 1943. A very strong military base was built on the island by the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia after 1945 and during that time foreign visitors were not allowed to visit Lastovo.
The economy and tourism on Lastovo started developing only after Croatia became an independent country.
