Gornja Nakovana was left without inhabitants in 1991. Cave was found in 1999. Oldest findings in the cave come from Neolithic. During those ages inhabitants lived in small communities. Cave has one area around 15 m wide and deep. First hall was used as shrine.
Cave Spila Nakovana is the richest finding of Illyrian culture in the world.

Nakovanj - History
Name Nakovana is old unknown name, first time mentioned in 1335. as Nacovalda and in 1357. as Nacoualna.
Historian Igor Fiskovic believes that Nakovanj was named after hill which is today called Grad, which looks like tool anvil (Croatian nakovanj).
Nakovanj is one of the oldest settlements on peninsula Peljesac. Archaeological findings show that this area was inhabited 8000 years ago.
Since the end of 19th century development in this area has been slow, especially during World War II. After the war many inhabitants moved to Loviste and Viganj and younger population moved to Australia and New Zealand. Last inhabitants of Gornja Nakovana left in 1991.

Legend says that in this area of peninsula Peljesac lived three brothers. They decided to divided properties so one brother gained forge (today settlement Kuciste), seconnd brother gained blacksmith's tool viganj (today settlement Viganj) and third brother gained anvil (today settlement Nakovanj). Legend says that this is how these settlements were founded.
