Prozura (island Mljet) - Attractions
In Prozura there are three old churches:
- the Church of the Holy Trinity,
- the Church of St. Martin,
- the Church of St. Roko.
The Church of the Holy Trinity was most probably built by the Benedictines from Lokrum when they came to own the land in Prozura. The church has the characteristics of Goth chapels of Dubrovnik. Inside the church can be seen the Romanesque bronze crucifix and the crucifix made in rustic Goth style from the 15th century on which can be seen St. Vlaho (patron saint of Dubrovnik), St. Martin (patron saint of the poor) and St. Nikola (patron saint of sailors and fishermen). The Benedictines from Lokrum lived in a monastery by the Church of the Holy Trinity until the end of the 18th century.
The Church of St. Martin who is the patron saint of the village is located above Prozura before the village cemetery. It has a small porch dating from the 14th century. The feast of St. Martin is celebrated on November 11th by a holy mass in the church.
The Church of St. Roko is a little younger than the two previous churches. The day of St. Roko is celebrated every year by a procession going from the Church of the Holy Trinity to the Church of St. Roko on August 16th.
National Park Mljet is situated on the west part of the island Mljet. The unique beauty of its indented coastline and numerous reefs, cliffs and islets and a rich array of densely forested hills prompted the Government of Croatia to declare it a National Park in 1960.
