Slano is a small place situated in the bay of Slano 37 km northwest to Dubrovnik belonging to the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It is located in the vicinity of the Adriatic state road D8.
Accommodation in Slano can be found in hotels and private houses and apartments. There are two hotels here: a 5star hotel Admiral, and a 3star hotel Osmine.
Slano is a great destination for water sports such as swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, dinghy sailing, riding a banana- boat, pedal-boat and gondola rides since it is situated in a deep well protected bay. The Dubrovnik-Slano regatta is held in summer and is a great sight but there is also a summer sailing school run by the local sailing club if you would like to try sailing yourself. If you prefer cycling or walking there are tracks leading from Slano which have viewpoints offering an amazing view of the entire coast, the Elaphite islands and the island Mljet.
During the summer season there are a many cultural, entertainment and sports events organized in Slano every year.
The ancient water mills in Slano are the symbols of traditional flour milling and guests can also see the entire process of olive oil and wine producing.
Boat rentals and private boat transfers can be hired in Slano to visit the islands of Mljet, Korcula, Brac, Hvar as well as the peninsula of Peljesac.

Slano - Attractions
In Slano and the surrounding area there have been discovered archaeological findings of an exceptional value. The tumulus found here marked the places where the rituals were held and were made as sort of a gravestone. They were also as a part of the fortification system of the settlements.
Between the villages Visocani and Lisac was discovered the largest necropolis of 48 tumulus.
The monastery and the Church of St Jeronim is situated on a dominant location overviewing the entire bay, sea channel and the surrounding hills south to the settlement. The monastery has been constructed by a noble family of Lisac from Dubrovnik, whereas the church was constructed by family Gradic in 1420. In front of the Franciscan church of St. Jeronim there can be seen four old Christian sarcophagus and two tombs.
In the northeast part of Slano by the main road is located the Prince’s Palace. The building complex is reminiscent more of a fortified estate than an official residence and has an imposing character.
Arboretum in Trsteno was founded out of the estate of the Gucetic family in 1948. It is situated 10 km from Slano towards Dubrovnik. In the Arboretum guests can see a preserved venue of architectural and botanic culture.
From Slano guests can hire private boat transfers or a boat rental to visit the island of Mljet that the British Time Magazine listed among the ten most beautiful islands of the world and is the only European island in that group. Slano - History
There are many archaeological findings such as the ruins of castles that were found on the nearby hills showing that Slano and its surrounding area have been inhabited in as early prehistoric times.
The ruins of an old Roman castrum that was a military camp are located on the hill Gradina above Slano and old Christian sarcophagus is now kept in front of the Franciscan church.
In the past Slano was a part of the Republic of Dubrovnik and was also used as a headquarters for princes and Rector’s Palace.
Slano and the surrounding villages were completely destroyed, burnt down and robbed during the homeland war fought for the independence of Croatia.
