Smokvica (island Korcula, Croatia) is small village on island Korcula, located in central part of island Korcula, 4 km west of Cara, 4 k north of Brna and 13 km west of Blato. Smokvica is part of Dubrovnik-Neretva's district.
Total area of Smokvica is 24,57 km2. It is situated underneath of hills Vela and Mala Obala. Smokvica is surrounded by many furtile plains: Prapratna, Banja, Krusevo, Stiniva, Livin dol, Sitnica and Cipojino plain. You can get to Smokvica by car, bus, speed boat, plane. If you are coming by car you can take highway A1 Zagreb-Split-Dubrovnik and exit in Vrgorac.
Then take a road to peninsula Peljesac and ferry to island Korcula. You can get to island also by ferries from Split and Dubrovnik or group or private boat excursions and private boat transfers. Name Smokvica comes from Romanic Smokvica which means presence of water. Smokvica has been inhabitated since Prehistory. There have been found many remains of antique ceramics, tools and dishes.
Smokvica is one of 5 oldest settlements on island Korcula. Smokvica is also mentioned in Korcula's statute from 1214. Parish Church of St. Mary has been first time mentioned in 1361. Turks have been attacking Smokvica since 1538. Most known battle was at Krvava ropa kept in 1571. In 1914. public school has been built. In 1955. ambulance has been built.
Smokvica has been under many rulers: Venetian, Austrian-Hungarian, Yugoslavian. Since 1991. Smokvica and island Korcula have been part of Independent Republic of Croatia.
