Sumartin has around 620 inhabitants who are mostly directed to agriculture, fishing, vine and olive growing and tourism.

Sumartin is part of Municipality Selca which is consisted of settlements: Selca, Novo Selo, Sumartin and Povlja.

During the 17th century when the Turks ravened the region of Croatia and Bosnia, the priest Petar Kuba came to live on the island Brac with a few more families in search of a shelter. They chose Sumartin as their place and built a small shrine in the honor of their patron saint Martin after whom this settlement was named in the 19th century. At the place of the shrine today stands a Franciscian Monastery built in 1747.

The settlement of Sumartin was established in 1646 by the refugees from Bosnia.

In Sumartin there is the oldest shipyard of the Adriatic.
