Svirce (island Hvar) - Location and Climate
Svirce is a settlement in Municipality of Jelsa, on island Hvar, Central Dalmatia, Croatia. It is located in the middle of Stari Grad plain, in the bottom of hill St. Nicholas. Svirce is located south of Vrbanj, east of Stari Grad and 4 km west of Jelsa. You can get to Svirce by car, airplane, bus, train or boat.
If you are coming by car or bus, you will take highway A1 Zagreb-Split and exit in Dugopolje. When you arrive to Split's port, you will take a ferry Split-Stari Grad and then a road Stari Grad-Svirce. If you are coming by plane, you will get to Airport Split and get to Split's port by bus, taxi or rent a car services.
You can continue with ferry to Stari Grad or you can rent a boat to get to Stari Grad and then follow the road Stari Grad-Svirce. Bus station and train station in Split, as well as the ferry port are very close, so you won't have problems in finding transportation. Also taxi services are available everywhere.

There are two opinions of name formation and foundation of Svirce. First opinion is that Svrice was founded when few shepherds separated from Vrbanj.
Legend says that they sang and danced around the players (Sviraci). The other opinion is that it was founded around water source, because „svir“ means water.
