Trilj - History
In the area of Trilj there are numerous archaeological findings dating from the Mesolithic era. The first ethnic group that inhabited this area was the Illyrian tribe Delmati. They lived in hill forts located along the area connecting their capital Delminium with the coast of Adriatic. The Romans defeated the Delmati tribe after a hundred and fifty years of fierce fighting.
The Romans then constructed their military camp Tilurium on the hill above Trilj. This camp had a task of safeguarding the entrance to the Cetina valley from the south and the approach to the provincial capital of Salona.
