Zaklopatica is a charming small fishermen’s village located in Zaklopatica Bay on the north coast of island Lastovo. It is situated about 2 km from the settlement of Lastovo and 7 km from the ferry port Ubli to the south west.
Zaklopatica is known as a heaven for yachtsmen and divers because of its well-known beauties and crystal clear waters that irresistibly invite and draw the visitors to explore the islands of the Lastovo archipelago and the many magnificent coves. From Zaklopatica there is a beautiful view of the neighboring island Korcula and the Lastovo Channel.
Guests can get a taste of the traditional Dalmatian cuisine in three of the restaurants in Zaklopatica. These restaurants also offer moorings for boats and yachts.
During the summer season there are many events organized every year from June till the end of September, and there are plenty of concerts, plays, food tasting and sport events held.
Driving a bike is an ideal form of recreation for those wanting to have a direct contact with the nature and the island of Lastovo is great for cycling as there is not much traffic on the paved roads and there are also many forest tracks.
There is a very rare bird species Puffinus yelkouan that nests on the small island of Zaklopatica. Its singing resembles the sound of a small child crying.
If you are an early rises you can buy fresh fish and crabs at a local fish market in the early mornings from the local fisherman.
From Zaklopatica visits to the islands of Mljet, Korcula and Hvar and even the city of Split are easily arranged with private boat transfers or group or private boat excursions.
Accommodation is available only in private houses and apartments in Zaklopatica as there are no hotels.

Zaklopatica (island Lastovo) - Attractions
Only 2 km from Zaklopatica there is the settlement of Lastovo which is a medieval village that has a long and interesting history. The shape of Lastovo resembles an amphitheater, and look amazing as it is surrounded by hills.
The chimneys of the old houses in Lastovo date from the17th and 18th century (Lastovski fumar). There is an interesting story about their origin. The locals of Lastovo had a competition among them who would make a prettier and a better chimney and so each new chimney was more original and unusual than the previous one.
The Church of St. Cosmas and Damian has been constructed in 1474. It was dedicated to the saints Cosmas and Damian who were brothers and physicians and also the heavenly patrons of the island.
The Church of St. Lucas is the third oldest in Croatia and the oldest one on the island. It has been constructed during the 11th century. Even today it stands in its original form even after a millennium has passed by. It is located by the road that was of great significance at those times since it connected Ubli and the village Lastovo.
Struga lighthouse was built in 1839 and is the oldest Austro-Hungarian lighthouse in the entire Adriatic. It was built on a high steep cliff of cape Struge after which it was named. It offers a spectacular panoramic view as it stands some 90 m above sea level.
The bay of Korita is situated 1 km from the settlement of Zaklopatica. It can be reached on foot through a forest track leading to it or by boat rental.
On the islet of Mladine that belongs to Lastovo archipelago there is a beach Saplun which is the only sand beach of Lastovo. The sand is found in the sea only and the quantity of sand depends on the winter winds.
Two small gravel beaches are located in the bay of Krucica. They are suitable for families with children as the water is shallow. These beaches can be reached by a forest track that leads from the main road Ubli-Lastovo or by a boat.

Zaklopatica is situated some 7 km from the port of Ubli and about 2 km from the settlement of Lastovo (coordinates 42°46’16’’N 16°52’26’’E).

Lastovo can be reached from Split and Vela luka by speed boat and ferry, or a private boat transfer every day. From Split to Lastovo the journey takes about 5 hours by ferry, and it takes approximately 3 hours by a speed boat. Lastovo is also connected to Dubrovnik by speedboat ‘Nona Ana’ in July and August (a 4 hour trip).
On the island of Lastovo there are two bus lines of which one connects Lastovo-Ubli –Pasadur, and the other connects Lastovo-Skrivena luka (this bus line runs only during the summer season).

In Zaklopatica only private accommodation is available.
Bring a pair of long sleeves with you if you are coming to Lastovo by ferry because the air condition set to very low temperature in the ferry during the summer season.
It is advisable to rent a car a couple of days before your arrival.
Group or private boat excursions as well as private boat transfers can be arranged for a tour of the islands of Korcula, Mljet and Hvar as well as for a visit to the town of Split. You can also rent a boat.
On the whole island there are only two ATMs, one in Ubli and the other in Lastovo.
There is no pharmacy on the island, but there is a basic supply of medicine open every day from 1.00-2.00pm except on Sundays and holidays.

Zaklopatica (island Lastovo) - History
The island of Lastovo has been first mentioned in a written document by the lexicographer Stephen of the Byzantium who called it Ladesta and Ladeston. The document dates from the 6th century. A Greek historian Theopompus born in the year 380.BC was the source he referred to.
Despite the fact that the oldest written document of Lastovo dates back to 6th century, there are archaeological findings showing the traces of human presence here even since the Stone Age (8500.BC). These findings were discovered in cave Racja.
The Illyrians inhabited Lastovo in prehistoric times. The island Lastovo was also one of the stops of the Greek trade routes on the Adriatic which is indicated by the findings of Greek pottery.
During the Roman times, when the Romans conquered Dalmatia, Lastovo was called Augusta Insula meaning Emperor’s island.
Croatians started inhabiting Dalmatia in the 7th century with the arrival of Slavs, and that included Lastovo as well.
The history of Lastovo has been very turbulent and at times violent. The town of Lastovo was devastated in 998 by the Venetian doge Pietro Orseolo II. After that unfortunate event the locals of Lastovo rebuilt the town on the inner side of the hill thus separating the town from the sea which made it easier to defend.
